When was the last time the government privatized anything that it worked out good in the end. We, the vets, are the ones who will get screwed in the end. I have working in healthcare for over thirty years. I have worked mostly for non-profit or no-for-profit systems. I have worked once for a for profit system. That would be like privatizing the VA. No company is going to take that on if they can't make money. That means do more with less, work your nurses and other staff harder, higher nurse-to-patient ratios, and justification after justification for every penny spent. Updating equipment or replacing broken equipment is a months long nightmare. When your heart stops, do you want them to have to go to another unit to get a working defibrillator? I have seen a for-profit hospital do away with staples and insist in the use of paperclips, because they can me reused. And what? If we take papers into an isolation room, do we throw away the papers and sent the paperclips down for decon?? Really?? Bad Idea!

In the waiting room of a doctor's office, there are plenty of slow-moving old guys who wheeze, cough, and limp. I know what the young people are thinking: 'Get out of the way old man, or just die already.' But when I'm in the waiting room at the VA, I know I'm surrounded by real men and tough women who sacrificed for our country. I know why they wheeze, cough, and limp. I'm proud to be in that number.

Amen! In my recent stays in the hospital, I found out the "respect" they give their patients. At the VA, everyone seems honored to be taking care of the vets. Actually, over 50% of them are vets.
