Everyone agrees the health care system needs work, long before Obama messed it up. But we can't afford to have tax-payer provided healthcare for all. We are 20 trillion in debt. The government needs to get out of the way, and instead regulate insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, work on finding cures instead of treatments, there are a dozen other things the government could do but providing healthcare is not one of them. It is not even the responsibility of the government. They need to regulate and oversee the industries sure, but let the fair market play out, healthy competition will drive rates to a reasonable level. Go after those who cheat the system with frivolous lawsuits, and medical companies that charger ridiculous amounts for medications and we could have affordable healthcare.

One last item - why I am a great fan of "givers" who love to give to "takers." There be a moral there somewhere, I believe. http://strib.mn/2t6OSrI

PO2 Harold Ashton - The USA is 20 trillions dollars in debt. We can't afford have the crap we are giving away. If you would have bothered to actually read what I said you would see tat there is way to fix it without forcing the tax payer to pick up the bill. There is nothing kool-aid about not wanting my hard earned tax dollars going to someone who hasn't earned it.

He left you an opening there you know. All these angels of mercy love spending other people's money then call you names. First, the Federal Government has no power to even be in the medical or insurance business ventures. (see Obama and solar tax payer waste) via the Constitution. He may state the Commerce Clause but that is to regulate and not invent out of whole cloth an entire system and frame work. Now for heads to explode time. There is,are a large % of medical issues that are caused by poor choices and lifestyles. Are we now going to force those that follow a healthy lifestyle to finance those that lets say enjoy life to the fullest? So, one group of individuals is forced, mandated to surrender the wealth that they earned thru work to those that have a medical need due to poor life choices? Isn't that are form of economic slavery? I know, heads will explode.
For a solution, if there was a delta of individuals that needed a service then why not develop a service for them or allow them to visit the VA.

I think we should address why the government is involved in Health Insurance first and then look at the medical industry as commerce and only allow the government to regulate the practice of the practice of medicine. Now we are in a funding discussion which leads to free care providing by the government. Where does it end. The Federal gov is involved in student aid- result is young adults are in default in record numbers. The Federal gov is involved in the housing loan business- result was the housing crisis with the failure of Freddie and Fanny. The Federal Gov got involved in the automobile industry and in the solar industry. Did the Fed Gov show a profit in any venture it overtook? It even failed at running a profitable brothel in Las Vegas that it took over. So, why do seeming intelligent service members think this is the time. They will get the medical insurance issue right?

Medicare is not free, everyone already pays into the system. Supplements and part D also cost. This could be paid by the individual through health savings accounts and/or supplemental private insurance. Medicaid could go away completely but the poor would be provided a state supported supplement to cover what Medicare doesn't if they meet the threshold for poverty.

At our charity, http://www.RIPMedicalDebt.org, we would love to be put out of business. No one should ever have to go bankrupt or have their credit scores ruined because they got sick or hurt. I'ts time to join the rest of the top civilized countries.

I do not expect to get thumbs-up from lobbyists, big pharma, insurance execs, etc. That works for me. The rest of you?
