Actually that reminds me of when I was reenlisting in the Army reserve at age 47 after a ten-year break. I was at MEPS for my physical and going through the line, I failed several stations and was rejected. When I asked about a waiver, they said there’s no waivers. I sympathetic Navy Medic Who was manning one of the stations intervened and took me back to see the commander of the station. I had mentioned to her while I was doing her station that my son was in the Navy and off on a sub. As she was talking to the commander, I noticed that he had submarine dolphins on his shirt. A crusty old chief, he called me in to talk about my son and his submarine and I left with the promise of a waiver. A year went by with not a word from anybody when a letter from the surgeon general in Washington DC arrived approving my waiver and at age 47, I was in the army again thanks to my sons submarine, the USS billfish.
