Memorial Day grilling safety

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - More than 65% of Americans grill for the Memorial Day holiday, making it the second biggest grill day of the year. (In case you're wondering, Fourth of July is first.)

With that in mind, it's important to stay safe while doing so. Grilling can be dangerous and even deadly, so News 3 is helping you make sure you're doing it right.

Bruce Barefoot, owner of Footers Sports Pub has been grilling for more than 45 years. He says the number one way people go wrong is not paying attention.

"Next thing you know you got flames going and your food is burned up. It's something you need to be attentive to," Bruce says.

When using a propane take Bruce says it's very important to remember to open the lid to your grill before lighting it.

"If they don't open up the lid and they let it fill up with propane. They reach in there and turn it on, it can blow up," he said.

When it comes to cooking the perfect meats you'll want to use a thermometer.

Some important tips include:
•Keep kids away from the grill at all times
•Cook with the lid closed
•Cook on a clean grill
