She should be on the ropes. She rolled the dice with the lives of German citizens and lost. Well, they lost, she is set for life. Funny how that works.
She decided to take the least safe approach by allowing an influx of refugees (with little/no screening) as well as not working more aggressively in home grown radical islamists. Germans are dying in the streets, she is protected from any physical recourse herself.

It's only my opinion, but they should have checked the people coming into the country over better, and kept close tabs on them.

The Germans have a complicated history. To shed light on the new tolerant Germany, the German government wanted to show the world its tolerance. Not only were there logistical problems with this, but social and philosophical problems were not considered. Unfortunately this will cost Merkel her job and may cause a backlash that will be even more intolerant.
