Message to the Department of Defense from Secretary of Defense James Mattis
6 HOURS AGO · PUBLIC
It’s good to be back and I’m grateful to serve alongside you as Secretary of Defense.
Together with the Intelligence Community we are the sentinels and guardians of our nation. We need only look to you, the uniformed and civilian members of the Department and your families, to see the fundamental unity of our country. You represent an America committed to the common good; an America that is never complacent about defending its freedoms; and an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.
Every action we take will be designed to ensure our military is ready to fight today and in the future. Recognizing that no nation is secure without friends, we will work with the State Department to strengthen our alliances. Further, we are devoted to gaining full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, thereby earning the trust of Congress and the American people.
I am confident you will do your part. I pledge to you I’ll do my best as your Secretary.

Sir, I retired from the Marine Corps in 1998 after 22 years. Actually you were about 4 years before I enlisted. I don't think we ever crossed paths, I wish we had. I can't express enough how proud I was to hear you named for this position. I have the utmost confidence in you that will take care of our troops. Good Luck and GOD speed. Semper Fi.

From the UK, massive fan of your record. Trump already made America great when he put forward your name. Best of Luck from your transatlantic Allies.

Sir... As a retired german infantry Senior NCO who worked and served together with U. S. soldiers through the decades of my career and still bound and related to my old friends would like to whish you the best luck and God's assistance in your new and hard duty. It is good to know even here that the US military has a leader now who knows what responsibility, duty, dignity and commitment to his men, the mission and the country is.

Please do what you can to reign in our unpredictable president. Even before his swearing in, he chose to start a feud between him and the military intelligence community simply because they told him unpleasant news.
We cannot afford to let the president approach other situations like that. It degraded moral within the force and damaged America. Please do what you can to protect our country from all threats, foreign and domestic.

Having read Robert Gates memoir "Duty" I appreciate the tremendous task before you. Patience with civilian politicians, military contractors, budgetary demands all await you. Most importantly he never forgot the troops serving in the field. Wish you success dealing with the challenges ahead-USAF veteran 69-75.

Any directors turned politicians in any intelligence agencies are advised to obtain boxes in the very near future. Moving day is coming and you'll be hearing these two words soon, "You're fired!"

Thank you for taking this assignment. Many of us in the country are greatly relieved that DOD has leadership that understands Foreign Policy. I, for one, have greater peace of mind knowing that you are steering that mighty force. God Bless You and America. A civilian and American citizen.
