I actually did this, I was on an AGR TOUR and scheduled for a Med Board. I reached the end of the tour and still hadn't been boarded. They thought that they had finished me off. My local service rep told me to "go to the VA and get a rating". I did and was rated 50%. I then filed with the ABCMR (Army Board for Correction of Military Records) for a medical retirement. Meanwhile I was still a reservist. FOUR Years went by and FINALLY I got a medical retirement back to the date I separated. It was only 30% but it was still a nice back pay check Unknown to me you can't have both. When I retired I was getting 80% from the VA along with 20% for unemployability. Since 100% from the VA was more than what the Army offered. I took the VA. That's where I've been for 20 years.

I wind up having to pay SBP, Dental Insurance, medicare x2 that's better than I could do on the Outside. I also get to use military facilities.

Thanks SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL for sharing. Persistence and patience are required for dealing with federal bureaucracy. Bulldog tenacity can help in some situations and it takes wisdom when to back off and let the system work through.
I have been waiting since at least October 2015 for the VBA to resolve my claim - or rather the claim submitted on my behalf.
