66 years years ago...The invasion by the North into South Korea was announced on the radio late on a Sunday night. The next day I rode with my Dad to begin working with him on a construction project in Watertown MA. He was very worried with this news and he was probably thinking that I and my friends could very well end up in a war in Korea. He was right just about all of my friends who were a few years older than I was ended up in Korea in 1950- 1951. I enlisted in 1953, 4 months after the truce in Panmunjom. A year later I was assigned to a Guard Company at the Boston Navy Yard and we had many who had just returned from Korea.

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - I never served in Korea and only had a few classes about it in Boot Camp & NCO School.. . I'm probably not the right guy to discuss Korea

Sgt Tom Cunnally - I was in Korea from 1987-2004 on 7 years worth of tours. I also went over in 2014 on my dime and wrote a book. I know that I have a lot to learn. But I found the story of you coming in 4 months after the truce and your training at CLNC to be very interesting unique stories. It would be great for another paragraph or two from your eyes serving during your time. I do have a Korea section. It would interest many. This is the Co-Authored with Dr. Anna Lint, “8 Eyes on Korea, A Travel Perspective of Seoul, Korea.” http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BAEVN7I All proceeds go to charity for scholarships.

In June 1950 when Korea began, the Army immediately sent in troops who had been stationed in Japan & were not very well trained for heavy duty combat. So MacArthur said "Let's call in the Marines" and the 1st Brigade of Marines landed in Pusan in August 1950. But because the Marines downsized after WWII, a lot of these troops were reservists with no boot camp or combat training. Some learned how to fire a BAR or .30 Cal Machine Gun on the Ships from CA to Korea. Marines helped with holding the Pusan Peninsula & then were sent to land at Inchon under the direction of Gen MacArthur . Meanwhile the Chinese were watching this fighting and the North Korean Army began to retreat back to North Korea; Mao decided to help them. Then all hell broke out in Korea in November 1950 even though MacArthur promised to have our troops home for Christmas.

"Military History: North Korea’s Surprise Attack, An Important Lesson in Battle Preparation "

We studied the Korean War in NCO School at Camp Lejeune and the instructors were mostly SNCOs & Officers who had been in Korea, They tried to summarize what went wrong and what went right in Korea. And how in the next conflict the Marines planned to use Helicopters more than they were used in the last year in Korea. Chosin was just one example of how things went wrong in Korea & both the Army & Marines because they were forced to react instead of have better planning before moving on up to the Chosin Reservoir area. They were not aware of the Chinese buildup north of the Yalu and that China was getting ready to invade North Korea in such massive numbers.

I learned much about the Korean War from instructors who had been there and done that but sadly some of the same mistakes the Marines made in Korea were made again in Vietnam ten years later. Underestimating the enemy, training, physical conditioning, are just a few of many..

Greetings Sir,
You are aware it is not PC to monitor the enemy signals while they are getting their FOB's filled with AKs, ammo and C-4.
What kind of American are you?
I suspect, a compassion training course is in store for folks like you.

I agree. I saw someone else talking today about not spying on other countries communications..... I wondered if Russian and China would stop that bad behavior??!!?
