California provides a foot in the door for qualified Corpsmen and medics to challenge and test for licensure (RN, LPN, LVN). Most won't qualify as RN, but when the qualify as LVN that also grants them advance placement in RN programs.
Methods of Entry-level Access as a Vocational Nurse
Method #4: Completion of education and experience as a corpsman in the United States military.
[] Twelve (12) months active duty rendering direct bedside patient care.
[] Completion of the basic course in nursing in a branch of the armed forces.
[] General honorable discharge from the military

In California in the late ‘80s there was a program called the Corpsman criteria in which if you met the requirements you could apply for a test and if you passed you could be liscenced in the state. Also while you were waiting to take the exam you could be issued an intern permit. That allowed me to work as a RN and get some OJT in nursing that helped with the exam. My Independant duty training was my path way for the program
