CW5 Jack Cardwell When I first met Colonel Mitch Paige in 1993/94 at church in Palm Desert, CA I noticed his EGA tie clasp. When I asked if he was a Marine, Mitch responded, “yes, aren’t you?”
As we chatted, I mentioned attending recently attending a Graduation at USMCRD San Diego, Mitch said he graduated MCRD Paris Island in 1936.
Mitch Paige, Colonel (retired) USMCR
passed away in 2003. Marilyn Paige his spouse maintained a memorial room with his awards in their home for years.
Marilyn, his wife, once wrote the Desert Sun, a local newspaper stating that Colonel Paige should have been recognized as the first CMH awardee on Guadalcanal rather than John Basilone.
The video contains a statement from the General presenting his medal to the effect that it was the fist CMH awarded to a member of the 1st Marine Division. That fact is not mentioned in his Citation from the 1st Marine History book. (I have a copy of the citation).
A building at 29 Palms Marine base is named after him.
