Mitt Romney inserts himself, scolds Trump for criticizing his innocent perfect hero, John McCain

I have a connection to McCain's story that has kept me following him throughout his career. I was the operations officer at the Strategic Communications Center that received an eyes only message to his father when McCain decided to decline the offer of release and remain with his comrades at the Hanoi Hilton. The message fell into the hands of the wrong people, but that's another story. The upshot is that I followed his career thereafter with more than a passing interest, and it is a cautionary tale. Do not celebrate the hero. Celebrate the act of heroism. The act will endure for all time while the hero may not (actually, most likely will not). It's a tale as old as time. We here on RP, more than others, can appreciate devotion to one's comrades, but we can not allow that one act to cloud our judgment. John McCain was never a good legislator. He stirred up controversy when he should have been gluing together coalitions. He took pride in his role as a maverick when he should have been a leader. Obviously, it is my belief that it is acceptable to criticize a "hero" and, thus, side with the President. Romney, on the other hand, is a "nice guy". Far too nice to win the Oval Office (that should be obvious to all). And standing by the one man who destroyed the effort to put a stake through the heart of the Affordable Care Act is the opposite of respecting McCain's one moment of glory.
