James J. Spurrier, Jr. was born on December 14, 1922, in Russell County, Virginia. A former American combat soldier who received the nation's two highest military decorations for valor—the Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross—for his heroic actions in World War II.
The capture of Achain was credited to one man: S/Sgt. James J. Spurrier, Bluefield, W. Va., a former farmer and Co. G, 134th, squad leader. When 2nd Bn. Attacked Achain Nov. 14, the 22-year-old sergeant entered the town alone from the west while his company drove in from the east.
