Lt Col Charlie Brown Always Recommend Reading About it in a Book or watching all the Cool Movies. First Hand Experience Kinda Sucks.

I actually live in the shadow of Vesuvius. In AD 79, Vesuvius erupted, launching 10,00 feet of it's cone into the Bay of Pompei, Pompie was buried in the rubble of rock that was once the cone of Vesuvius, Hercaleum, a fishing village less then a Kilometer away from Pompei, was more fortunate in it's death, as the heat flash from the eruption caught it's citizens, instantly killing them. Of the two archeological sites, Hercaleum is the better preserved dig, as almost all of its non burnable structures survived, including some amazing frescoes. As for the myth about it being a surprise eruption, the warnings were there about it for two years, including "belches" and minor tremors.
Fun fact - Vesuvius is not the major volcanic threat in the region, as the Bay of Naples sit's atop a supervolcano the size of Yellowstone, and has been showing seismic signs for 5 years now, it has been noted that the lava flow, which once was going east to west, has reversed.
Another fun fact - Vesuvius is one of 8 volcanoes in the Campania region of Italy, most are dormant, and nearly all have vineyards.
And yet one more fun fact - Capua - which is famous for the Spartacus rebellion, was once a seaside city, until AD 79. If any of you have watched the Starz show Spartacus, and you saw them training on a cliff with a sea in the background, that was the Bay of Pompei, before the eruption. The Amphitheater were Spartacus and the gladiator rebellion occured still stands, and you can go into the bowels of the arena and see where the slaves and animals were kept.
