I normally wouldn't waste my time reading about WNBA player Brittney Griner, who's looking at serious prison time in Russia due to "drug possession" because I'm pretty sure the WNBA Offices most likely sat the Young Lady down and gave her a copy of the do's and don'ts while playing overseas and even if they didn't then it's her responsibility to not do things that may lead to prison time in the Country you are playing in or visiting. I read the article to inform myself of what actually happened, and I found myself in amazement of a statement made by Breanna Stewart (former WNBA Star): “The big thing is the fact that we have to go over there. It was BG, but it could have been anybody,” said Breanna Stewart, who earns over $1 million to play in Russia. “WNBA players need to be valued in their country and they won’t have to play overseas.”
I have news for you, Breanna: The WNBA is currently valued to the exact level of their play when compared to Men's Pro or College Basketball. The WNBA would have folded years ago if not for the subsidy provided by the NBA. Your lack of fan base and proceeds originating from your play is due exactly to the level of play offered. A $33 ticket in the nose bleed section to see the WNBA Dallas Wings play the WNBA Atlanta Dream, with other tickets scaling higher until you reach floor level for $193 may seem like a bargain for the level of play offered, but when an NBA Team or good College team is playing, guess what most folks are doing? Yep, watching something other than the WNBA. How is that the Basketball consumer's fault? Basically, in my opinion, what you are actually saying is "You have to watch the WNBA or you are a sexist" and that's a disingenuous thought process at best. Like everything else, Basketball fans vote with their feet and wallet; nothing more, nothing less.
