My father served in the China Burma India theater during WWII, mechanic and crew chief flying the Hump and dropping supplies into Burma. He got to see how the Japanese not only treated Allied prisoners, but how they treated the Chinese and Burmese too. Bridge Over the River Kwai was not in any way based in reality, the reality was that 90,000 native laborers and 16,000 POW's perished building the railroad. Captured flight crews were routinely tortured and killed.
