I haven't dealt with the VA yet since I'm still AD but I have been asked by my base doc, while she was going down a list on a paper, if I owned any firearms...
Doc: Do you own any firearms?
Me: That's none of your business, ma'am.
Doc: It's part of my questionnaire, so do you or don't you?
Me: Again, that's none of your business, Doc.
Doc: I'll ask you one more time before I contact your leadership. Do you own any firearms?
Me: That's none of yours or anyone else's fucking business, ma'am. Contact my leadership, they'll tell you the same thing.
I didn't even stay for the rest of the questionnaire. I went straight to my first sergeant and told him about it. He said they'll tell the doc the same thing. Man, I miss that leadership.

I'm of two minds on this matter. Standing on principle and telling the questioner he has no right to ask the question has great appeal. The more prudent action would be to simply lie. I see nothing wrong with a lie in response to a question which is asked with no basis of justification of obtaining truthful information. No one has the right to ask that question, so they have no right to a truthful answer.

There were a few stories about this, I don't know how many but the general way it was being done was any Vet that requested any kind of financial help or was deemed incapable of managing their VA Benefits was placed on a list, the List was sent to the FBI who would go collect the firearms. It was a simple way for them to side step actual law and keep it out of the courts. Here is a link to one such instance that got some press coverage. One of the biggest issues was the list is not unlike the No Fly list, no courts, no defense, and no appeals process. Your on it and its done.

BREAKING: VA Tries to Confiscate Disabled Vet's Guns, Stopped by Citizens and Sheriff Standing...
President Obama has said time and again that his greatest disappointment was that he was unable to enact new gun control legislation to further restrict the right of American citizens...

I am currently considering putting my assets and income streams into a group of trust funds, to provide a smooth transfer of my wealth when I no longer need it.
I would retain the final say in investment management, income distribution, etc. from those trusts, but I do not doubt that the Dems would love to interpret that establishment of trust funds as "proof" that I am incompetent to manage my affairs.

Using the VA and Social Security Administration, it wouldn't surprise me even a little bit.
