Prayers to the family of this young man.
The worst part for them is that it is unlikely he will ever be found... and so they'll never know for sure what happened.

This one is pretty suspicious to me, Top. They searched for the East Coast Sailor for TWO whole days. They searched for this guy for 12 hours. That tells me there's more to this story than we know yet. I suspect they knew he was dead for some reason they haven't released yet.

Turns out the story has a twist - he was found hiding in one of the engine room spaces. Hopefully, he is ok. I'm sure his family will be relieved, even if he has some explaining to do.

Well, that's better than the alternative, though it pains me to see a Sailor either 1. wuss out like that or 2. have mental issues severe enough to do something so messed up. You should post this as it's own link imo, 1SG. It's a big enough story.

RIP Sailor. Can someone explain to me how you can fall overboard with all the protective measures the Navy has to prevent it? I'm not joking, but asking being to me it seems "hard", and this is the second one in a week?

The vast majority of not falling overboard is common sense. Stay away from the rail unless you have to be there. Don't go out when the swell is meeting the bridge wings, etc. Then, you get the accidental stuff. You trip and fall. A sudden swell knocks you over, etc. However, it is a common misconception that Sailors go around wearing life jackets all the time. 90% of the time, we do not. Only for specific evolutions do those come out. So honestly, if you're not paying attention, it's not all that hard to take the nose dive. It's also not all that hard to avoid doing so. So the bigger question is, how can it happen, and then they don't recover you? To have an incident where a Sailor is observed going over, and then not recovered, is MUCH more rare than to have one observed, and then remain unrecovered. To have TWO such incidents in one week? Pretty unheard of. Usually, if they see you, they get you. Lots of factors can determine the outcome. First and foremost, the screws, and speed of the ship, and the speed of the response. If you get sucked into the screws, well. You just paid off the mortgage on your farm. If you hit your head on the way down (entirely possible, MCPO Roger Collins had a Sailor do just that), there's your farm again. If no one SEES you...you're ordering fertilizer and corn seed. Etc.
