I cannot imagine how I would react in that situation. I like to think I'd do the same thing, but I hope I never know for sure. He died a hero.

The souls of the seven shipmates will forever be on watch until her flag is retired. Bravery and loss is imbedded throughout the ship strengthening the resolve of future sailors. God Bless those who go down to the sea in ships to sail the great waters to see the works of the Lord (Psalms 107.23).

I am unsurprised, but I'm a little wary of stories from families -- they're always going to see their loved ones through a filter, and in this case, how would he know? I am absolutely sure FC1 Rehm helped his shipmates, because that's what you do in that situation, but I'll wait for the official report. It's a crying shame, he was 3 months shy of retirement.

SN Greg Wright Apparently they witness statements are being released. FC1 Rehm managed to get 20 sailors out, but couldn't save the other 6, so he closed the watertight hatch to save the rest of the ship. We trained to this exact scenario, never thought I would have to hear about a sailor doing it. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. RIP

LT Brad McInnis - He'll be the first Surface Warfare MOH recipient since the Vietnam war, then. Probably had to defend that hatch against hysterical youngsters, though. Can you even imagine?

SN Greg Wright - No, I really can't. I would expect at least a DDG named after him (or maybe a re-naming of the Gabbie Giffords).
