I had a buddy that did an O-3 command tour. He spent a solid 9 or 10 years at sea and was burned out. But, it would be a blast!

Navy has always overreached for paygrade as far as commanding Boats and Ships. No, I would not let a fresh out of the Academy Ensign take Command of an Aircraft Carrier, but do we really need a full LT to be the CO of a 5 man crew (one of 2 for each boat)? or a LCDR to command a mini-squadron of three of the little boats. I am sure, after being in a Minewarfare Squadron that Navy might want to look at using Warrant officers and the very talented Chief Petty officers in our Navy as Commanders for these tiny gun platforms. Of course, that does reduce the available Command Billets for Junior Officers.
If we look at history many PT Boats were commanded by LT(jg) instead of LT. They had typical crews of 3 officers and 14 enlisted. Now we "need" a LT to run a boat with 4 enlisted? Let's take a good look at this once again.

CMDCM Gene Treants I agree 100%. CPO's in the the Coast Guard are given command of many small craft patrol boats, I know that for a fact, as I have very old friend who is a retired Master Chief in the Coast Guard who did that very thing.

CWO3 Dennis M. - I know we are talking treason here, it goes against TRADITION, but we CPO Community is a different breed of Sailor then what we had in the beginnings of the Navy or even during WWII! Both WO and CPO Communities are more educated and capable today than ever before! It's time to use assets as well as we can as the Navy shrinks.

LT Brad McInnis LCDR (Join to see) Hell, If Army Warrants can fly Helo's, I think Navy CWO's that are SWO qualified should be able to command these suckers. I drove a 500 foot nuke cruiser for years, an 85 foot runabout will be a piece of cake! But, at 70 years old, the Navy would not even give me a rowboat right now

I agree and also agree that we get smarter and more lustful as we get older - for different things than when we were 19!
