Not New England, but here in Kentucky Jan 1978 we got hit by a blizzard then the temps dropped well below zero for almost the entire month. There was a picture of some fool who drove his four wheel drive truck across the Ohio River from Kentucky to Indiana, now that is about 3/4 of a mile wide and over 50' deep, and the entire river froze over solid and stopped all barge traffic for almost 2 months.

I have no idea if the two are related, but that was the coldest winter here in my neck of the woods that I can remember. But I don't care how cold it gets and how deep the ice gets on the Ohio, no way would I ever drive a vehicle out on to that ice, if you broke thru, no way in hell the current would ever let you swim back to the hole.
