While it is a start the US mental health infrastructure has some serious issues. 56% of American adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment. Even in Maine, the state with the best access, 41.4% of adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment. This is in due in part to a shortage of mental health care professionals. In states with the lowest workforce, there is up to 6 times the individuals to only 1 mental health professional. This includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatric nurses combined.

Any effort to help is a good effort, but this isn't necessarily where the focus should be. Unless there is bad paper involved, it is much easier for newly discharged veterans to get care than those that served years ago. There are far more veterans committing suicide over the age of 50 than there are youngsters. There needs to be a focus on these older veterans and getting them connected with the services they need.

How will this be paid for?
Where will the additional resources come from?
