Writer Talia Lavin spent a year immersed in the online world of white supremacists, using two identities: Ashlynn, the ‘Aryan Princess’, and Tommy O’Hara, the incel ("involuntary celibate'') to be able to infiltrate extremist chatrooms. It led to her new book ‘Culture Warlords’, which looks at the threat posed online from such groups. She calls the chat rooms 'acceleration machines' for hate and violence.

"One of the people I spoke to... was an assistant professor in Zurich. There were people who were software developers, members of the military... This idea that you must be uniquely damaged or traumatised to join the white power movement, just doesn't bear out."
