This is one of my favorite topics. Marconi successfully generated RF (radio frequency) signals during his experiments while attempting to devise a system of transmitting electricity wirelessly. The only problem is that he succeeded without recognizing his success. Therein lies the issue. The same can be said of countless people who discovered America before Columbus arrived. We know they were here. Romans. Carthaginians. Norseman. Chinese. And more. We've found evidence of their presence here in pre-Columbian times. To be fair, Columbus didn't realize he had "discovered" America on his first voyages. He had underestimated the size of the earth and thought he had simply sailed to the Indies via the Western Route. It wasn't until his later voyages that he convinced himself of his discovery and proclaimed it. Therein lies the rub. "Discovery" requires feedback. You have to let others know about it otherwise it isn't a discovery. It's a secret. In Tesla's case, it was simply unrecognized and therefore worthless. Marconi demonstrated the practical application.
