No New Refineries in 29 Years? There Might Well Be a Reason (Published 2005)

The last oil refinery built in the US was in 1976, that is 46 years. It is impossible to build a refinery in America today. Reports I have read indicate we are at maximum capacity for oil processing. Efforts to increase our needed capacity are thwarted by government regulations, environmental protests and litigation etc. Why has America lost the ability to foresee needed investment in our future? America has wasted billions on green energy wishful thinking but little on needed practical projects.

Ran across this. Interesting concept. I think smaller refineries at oil production areas has a lot of merit. This gives you an idea how onerous it is just to get through the litigation process. They kept the capacity low to avoid the federal permits and legal challenges. Strange reference. Last refinery with significant down stream capacity came on line in 1977. I suppose there are many smaller that lack significance for our needs. Nice comment.
