Thanks for reminding us SP5 Mark Kuzinski that the NVA accused the South Vietnamese and the USA of attacking Hon Me and Hon Ngu which were two of their islands in the Tonkin Gulf.
They were technically correct in calling us out after the attack after midnight on July 30, were part of a covert operation called Oplan 34A. While the swift boats and commandoes were South Vietnamese our naval assets provided over watch of the operation.
It was interesting that on August 2, North Vietnamese patrol boats attacked the destroyer USS Maddox which was conducting an Operation De Soto mission in the area.
The North Vietnamese were defending their territory. I expect we may used Operation De Soto in part to draw an attack on our ships which could easily defend themselves. We used the Gulf of Tonkin incidents to justify our involvement to a greater extent including sending ground forces.
