Not Even Chemicals Can Stop the Indomitable Cockroach

Cockroaches abound on military bases, especially in Hawaii. When I arrived at Tripler Army Medical Center on the island of Oahu after my tour of duty in Vietnam, I was told to put moth balls under the floor mats in my car. Why? So the cockroaches wouldn't infest the car and eat the insulation off the wiring. So, I complied. Can you imagine the stench getting into a car full of moth balls after it's been sitting closed up under the tropical Sun? Okay, that was a practical joke and I fell for it. The only effective defense against cockroaches there were geckos. The tiny lizards clamoring along walls and ceilings were welcome guests until mating season when the males summoned females with croaks like a bullfrog, usually in the middle of the night.

Reminds me of the time I was going to do a brake job on my 1 ton van. I got 2 jars of vinegar put them under the seat. When I did the brakes I only used one and forgot about the other. After the winter in spring when thing started to thaw did I remember the vinegar. It had froze and the jar broke during the winter.
