One thing in my nearly 40 years of experience, is just when you start to relax, boom! Winter Weather Warnings occur. Looking back a week ago, a very cold air-mass near the North Pole. This air-mass was very broad and logically it comes here, to a city near you.
Persistence is a term used in Meteorology, in effect saying, until things change, no need to change the forecast. The wild card is that air-masses are affected by long waves. Essentially, super highways for fronts and disturbances. Standard deviations may be applied, but just assuming that all is well and good, provides are template for disaster.
These events can cause damage, including the loss of life, wide-spread damage and a lack of disaster preparedness.
This current regime is expected to see a foot or more of snow over MN/WI and areas adjacent to the Great Lakes. Cold, windy and blizzard conditions will happen that we largely ignored. The Central USA, south of the Lakes will of course, receive much less in the way of accumulations. Certain areas like the mountains will also enhance lift and adiabatic processes.l
A Low across the SE, will produce the potential of frozen precipitation. Seeing that High Pressure is expected over the SE, could mitigate against winter weather, except for cold temperatures and high winds. Stand by on that facet of winter weather. Lows can be hard to forecast.
