Some of you will agree with this, some of you wont. I do agree with better gun background checking. I agree with dealers at gun shows running background checks. After that, there isn't much I agree on. My opinion is Obama is a sheep in wolves clothing. If he can get assault weapons removed from the shelves, it's only a click away from banning all weapons. I watched his speech, and the fake tears. If he wants some gun control, he needs to be a man, and not a whimpering leader. I agree gun and ammo sales have increased two fold after that speech, which is not what he wanted, but the speech did help the gun rights owners go out to buy more guns. What I hope and pray for is the gun violence be stopped, and the gun owners be responsible for their weapons.

Imagine a republican president banning abortion by executive order. Does anyone think the Ds would sit back and accept it?

Requiring gun control is not overwriting a law. Abortion is legal in the USA. However, I do thnk that if women have to jump through hoops to get an abortion, men should do the same for viagra. If the guys don't want to deal with the results of their fun, they should not have the option to start the process!

Maybe a President wouldn't ban abortion by Executive Order but could try to make it where minors' parents and/or the father must be notified or mandate a sonogram prior to the procedure. That would be the most direct analogy to what he is doing now.

In my opinion, The president does not want anyone's guns. He, (and I) would like to see guns kept away from people who have not the responsibility or maturity to use it properly. I worry more about the mentally ill getting guns and shooting up something because of a delusion. Criminals are not mentally ill-they are sociopaths. That is a different issue. I have Libertarian friends who resent the government exerting controls over who gets a gun. They fear "irresponsible liberals." My response is that if things done their way will allow those very liberals to have guns-are they ready for that? All I heard back are crickets...

There are several permutations of this discussion running concurrently on RP and I feel compelled to respond to all of them. It is that important. Nothing that President Obama has proposed will reduce the risk of gun violence. Period. Enforcing the existing laws would help but he has never attempted that. The main provisions of his new Executive Orders are based on the claim that guns are falling into the hands of mentally disturbed individuals and we must stop that. How? Identify people who are mentally disturbed. Veterans receiving treatment from the VA. (Actually, they've been reported for some time now.) Social Security benefits whose checks are being sent to trustees. Like the Soviet Union of old, President Obama will use the psychiatric sciences to remove rights punitively. He wouldn't do that? Hasn't he already used the IRS punitively?
