Okinawa's governor, filed a lawsuit against the government of Japan in order to halt the relocation of the US Marine Corps base Futenma.
This is most likely for economic reasons as Okinawa hosts more than half of the U.S. troops in Japan. The loss would likely be initially devastating to the local region. Business' and people would eventually recover as adjustments are made and relocation happens. Okinawa's governor said,
“We will resort to every possible measure and will not allow the new base to be built in Henoko,” Governor of Okinawa Takeshi Onaga told a press conference on Friday, as quoted by Japan Today.
The current USMC Air Station Futenma is planned to relocate to Henoko under US-Japanese arrangements citing “less military impact” on the island’s population.

I was stationed over there from 2007-2010 and this battle was going on then. Crazy. It's been a love/hate relationship since the reversion in 1972. The sad part is most of the protests that occurred were mainlanders coming over and protesting. Most Okinawans I encountered were very warm and friendly. I wish I could go back. Tomorrow.
