Until this incident, I had never heard of a bump stock nor seen one at the gun shows I attend. And I'm firearm enthusiast. I guess I'm just not looking for things which increase my rate of fire.

Neither had I. Now that I see it, it makes sense how it works. Just keep constant pressure on the trigger, the recoil pushes your finger momentarily forward (or the rest of the rifle momentarily back as I read more closely) and the pressure you are exerting depresses the trigger again, firing the next round which momentarily pushes your finger forward again. Simple and clever.

My nephew has one. I've fired it a couple of times. They are a good way to waste ammo for the most part. They have no accuracy. However in this case the shooter was aiming at 20,000 people packed into half a city block, so accuracy wasn't needed.

These have been around for quite awhile. There are several legal accessories that allow for rapid fire of a semi-automatic weapon.

Sgt Wayne Wood I have also seen shooters who have performed trigger jobs on their ARs and lightened the trigger weight. Coupled with a fast finger trigger, they fire nearly as fast as a fully auto AR.
