I don't trust any of the virtual currencies and I question the judgement of anyone who considers this alternative asset. It is chasing a unicorn, who knows what the value will be?
Typical alternative assets do not correlate with the stock market. Commodity investments are typical: Gold, indexes tied to agriculture, oil, hedge ETF or funds. Most the large fund families have hedge or funds to have a cost efficient way of indexing for alternate assets.
Vanguard offers one of the lowest cost way to hedge:
