The reason is succeeding in Ukraine vs those other areas is simple. Conventionally we did succeed in all Iraq and Afghanistan. Those were not military failings. The failing was deciding we could engage in nation building in an area that didn't want the nation we wanted built and trying to use the military to do it.

There are many reasons. One is a self-inflicted Battle of the Bulge outside of Kiev where the Russians ran out of supplies and fuel.
