This Natural Gas/Oil field has been around since the Soviet occupation. No one has been able to exploit it. There may be a huge deposit, but the question is whether it is accessible and exploitable with current technology. Second, can they secure it and the distribution system to actual utilize it.

LTC Jason Mackay I really think the security is the bigger issue. I don't think that it could be secured. It would be something that the tribal leaders fight for control over leading to the infrastructure being damaged. That goes back to your first point that it would not be able to be used because the equipment would be constantly battle damaged and under repair.

Lithium is the resource Afghanistan should be working toward.

I think another thing hindering it is the vast population of diverse tribes that can't seem to get along with one another. Hard to get a stable workforce together if no one will cooperate. Could be an issue that neighbors might try to come swooping in to take over operation of oil fields, too?

SSgt (Join to see) Something I don't think that we are capable of understanding. You are absolutely right that it is a tribal culture. Tribal cultures do not function the way western "civilized" society works. Tribes establish treaties by marriage and wage war over insult. Throw in there the division between the different forms of Islam and you end up with a quagmire that is better left to its tribal nature. I also agree that establishing oil fields means putting a battlefield in play. Fun for video games, not so much when it is real people.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - right? I think, moreso than other ME countries, Afghanistan shows the downfall of Sykes-Picot. They created a country w/ ZERO regard to the peoples in that area, or consideration of how they got along.
