It is very sad if there are tens of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with less-than-honorable discharges SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. That shocked me to read. I would have expected most Iraq and Afghanistan veterans would have been discharged honorably.
I hope the vast majority are characterized as General Discharges for those with less than honorable discharge.
After reviewing the webpage of the legal services and community outreach not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and a survey of readily available information, I think the number is exaggerated and based on an old story from the National Journal.
"The number of other-than-honorable discharges has diminished across the service, dropping from 1,931 in 2012 to 1,189 in 2014." http://gazette.com/otherthanhonorable/followup
I found the following quote from September 2014 which is probably where this started ""Tens of thousands of soldiers who are discharged from the military ... and the number of other-than-honorable conditions, bad conduct, ..." https://www.nationaljournal.com/login.
The name Swords for Plowshares which is biblical reference made me curios; so I did some basic research.
Regional focus - "Founded in 1974 by veterans, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides needs assessment and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to approximately 3,000 veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area each year.
85% of funds support veterans "Swords to Plowshares is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our annual operating budget is approximately $19 million dollars, which supports our direct services to veterans, community education and advocacy work. Year after year, more than 85% of our budget goes directly to serving our veteran clients and providing free educational resources to the community."

It is even more saddening that it more likely than not, that it is still occurring in 2016
