Honestly the Chinese and Russians for that matter have been in Panama way before I was there in 90-93. Chinese investors had their sites on a part of the Pacific side of the Canal for building new infrastructure. Panama always had the best seat in the house for Central and South American dominance no matter the players.

Yup... i Chinese interests have dominated both ends of the canal for years...
Now there is also preliminary investment in a proposed canal through Lake Nicauragua

China used to run one of the ports if not a port on both sides of the PN Canal....Glad we built it for them to have a true war time control of our shipping. (Sarcasm!)

Worse decision was to give control of the Panama Canal back to the Panamanians. Carter thought he was doing something great, what he did was open the doors to other countries to take a stake pretty much in our back yard.

It’s a lot cheaper than building their own canal in Nicaragua, which they talked of doing in the late 1980’s. President Carter opened the door for this when he gave control of the canal to Panama. Many people saw this coming when the canal was turned over.
