Please no more naming Naval vessels after civilian politicians of any stripe or color no matter how egregious their situation may have been. Save that particular honor for US service members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Naming ships is not a political plumb or a social statement. Disgraceful and disgusting.

Totally agree with you Capt Tom Brown. I was always proud of the history of my ship's namesakes.

I agree with you Capt Tom Brown, I guess that they decided that carriers will be named after Presidents, but PLEASE lets make sure they are DEAD before we name them as such (by at least 20 years) But definetly the ships should be named after hero's with or without awards or cities or states (ie USS Albuquerque / USS Texas)

Minimum naming requirement should read like MOH standards. Only those that have done the upmost to personally enshrine the standards of the Navy or those sited for extraordinary valor should be considered for this honor. I personally disagree with the recent Gabby Giffords naming of LCS-10, along with several others. Though her ordeal was terrible she was only a politician and never served in the Navy and does not in my mind deserve this honor, again not trying to belittle what happened to her. To me !st Class Gary L Rehm Jr would fit into the category of those who should be perpetually honored by naming a ship for him.

Rehm Jr, who gave his own life to save 20 other sailors while serving aboard the U.S.S. Fitzgerald. He epitomized the guiding principle of Ship, Shipmate, Self by making...
