Thanks for reminding us that it wasn't that long ago when women were serving as sailors and that the color barrier was broken not very long ago SGT John " Mac " McConnell. Many people don't realize that in WWII there was distinct segregation of units. Obviously Japanese American soldiers were grouped together for safety, efficiency, language, etc. Black battalions were separated from white battalions yet fought side by side in the war in many places.
It is somewhat shocking that it was not until 1945 that the first black nurse was inducted into the United States Navy Nurse Corps. Kudos to Phyllis Mae Dailey.
