Roger Waters wrote the majority of "The Wall" as a protest against some facets of British life that he disapproved of. One of which is the cookie-cutter machinery for taking students and making them into 'model citizens.' Now while the movie and the video and indeed, the song, all rail about lack of creativity, teachers beating you down etc, it should be noted that most of rock music is artistic young English kids (Beatles, Queen, Rolling Stones, etc). So perhaps not EVERYONE was as stifled as young Roger felt? The Greatest Generation and its willingness to die for a cause that may or may not be palatable is another hallmark of The Wall and Britain's failed performance at Anzio in particular attracts the attention of Roger's pen.

Roger then used his life of fame as a "wall" to shield himself from the un-fulfilled life that he missed out on due to his father dying young (at Anzio) and also due to his creativity being stifled by "the system." Deeming the majority of the material too depressing, the group would pare a lot of it down which would end up on the follow on album, "The Final Cut." Today, a person expressing such angst and bitterness would have tons of rehabilitation options available. In 1960's Britain, nothing such existed. So if Roger was able to get the "therapy" he needed by penning and performing "The Wall" then more power to him.
