Police Chaplains vs Military Chaplains
What I am about to ask is not strictly military, but is does involve the military to a certain extent.
I came across a report that talks about police chaplains receiving weapons training. The idea behind it is that sometimes sworn police officers sometimes need back up much more immediately than the 2 to 5 minutes it could take for backup to show up to a dangerous scene. Also, it had been noted that there have been a few police chaplains who had been killed in the line of duty because they had no protection immediate protection on themselves.
In the military, we are taught that chaplains are pretty much prohibited from carrying weapons. Because of this, they are either positioned with medical units away from the front lines or they always have an armed chaplain assistant or other service member accompany them in a combat environment. It's a little different for Navy chaplains since they travel with their ship when not assigned to a land-based Marine Corps unit. I assumed that this is similarly the case for those working in behalf of the police, especially since chaplains are not ordinarily sworn police officers.
The news report is below. I believe the rules of engagement for civil police authority is not governed by the Geneva Convention, so this may not be a completely fair question. However, it would still be interesting to know your opinion about this.

In some cases, a Police Chaplain is a sworn officer, who also is ordained. In most cases, they are kept in administrative positions and tucked behind a desk until needed.

I can't see the harm in it. I can't see the harm in a military chaplain having a side arm for self protection either, but I understand why they don't.

As a retired police officer, who has worked with Police Chaplins. Most Police Chaplins are civilians who volunteer to assist when needed unless your with a major city department. The City I worked with used volunteers Chaplins from the community due to the fact there was no money in the budget for a full time chaplain, but most are weapons trained and carried a weapon for personal protection as well as to backup the officer their with. Most are trained by the department but only carries with permission from the Chief.
