Additionally, there was a rumor of "Werewolves" which were young kids - a la Hitler Youth - who would not surrender and carry on the war against the Allied rear lines.
Well...
It turned out to be true, though not the "old men and frightened kids" that Allied command posted. They turned out to be highly organized (some equipped with armor!) demobilized SS and other units and they killed quite a few Allied soldiers, derailed a whole lotta trains and blew up a whole lotta bridges, etc. Only the Cold War and it's pressing need for people literate in fighting Russians, caused it to stave off.
