American freedom for me! I don't want Google or Amazon or anyone else tracking, controlling, or limiting my movements. Dirt roads, national parks...I want to go anywhere I want, and I want the freedom to change my mind in the middle of a trip. Car and Driver did an excellent in-depth look at the future of self-driving cars two month back. Check it out.

The fully computer-driven car is supposedly imminent. Is driving dead? We take a close look in this package edited by Malcolm Gladwell. Read it at Car and Driver.

Kind of to my point. AI is great for people whose driving experience is to and from work in urban areas. However if you yearn for the road and the thrill of exploring new areas, AI may not be your thing for many, many years to come.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Just like Jeeps have lockers that you don't use all the time, they will have AI that you turn off and on when it makes sense.

SSgt Christopher Brose - I think as cars become more electric and less mechanical, it will actually be EASIER to go offroad. A lot of the problem in off-roading is the clearance and articulation. That's why solid front axle's are more desireable that IFS. Now, take out the transmission issues with an electric motor on each wheel and you have TRUE independent 4-wheel drive without complicated lockers or switches. And without the axle's you get much better clearance all around.

MAJ Bryan Zeski - I wasn't thinking about the electro-mechanicals, I was thinking of the electronics. I don't have any qualms about electric cars, other than recharging them. (That puts a load on the electric power grid that I think many environmentalists don't take into account.)

I was considering getting a plug-in hybrid minivan... until I heard the price.

You do know that electric cars put 100% torque directly to the wheels and that they are therefore faster off the line than any non-electric car? A Tesla will SMOKE something like the Dodge Demon off the line.

I look forward to the day when automated driving is the status quo and not something special. Sure, computers can make mistakes and things go bad. I have no doubt that people make MANY more mistakes and kill many more people.
I look forward to hopping in my car and setting it to go to "Work" and enjoying the newspaper and a cup of coffee on the way. I look forward to going to a busy restaurant in the middle of a big city, having my car drop me off and then go find itself a place to park - and when I'm done, I'll give it a buzz and it'll come pick me up - and if I've had too much to drink, it'll safely and legally get me home without hurting me or anyone else on the road. I look forward to not having to find a place to park at concerts or events. I look forward to enjoying the scenery of the countryside instead of worrying about the crazy people driving around me. I look forward to the dramatic reduction in highway deaths due to negligence, inexperience, fatigue, alcohol, distraction, and every other thing that gets people killed on the highway.
The days of fully automated driving can't come soon enough.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - I'll take one smart car and one dumb driver on the road over two dumb drivers on the road any day. It may be a while off, but, it was essentially unthinkable 10 years ago - we've come a long way.
I think the first industry that will be transformed will be the long-haul industry and that will bring rapid change across the rest of society.

Agree with you on that. See practicality of AI long haul trucks long before family autos.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Tesla has their electric semi coming out in the next few years - preorders are already in - I imagine that they will be partially self-driving. This is just the beginning.
