No I don't think it should be. You know what you are getting into when you enlist. So if you enlist knowing these things then you shouldn't complain about it later and ask for special considerations.

I can't believe so many responses to this poll. Muslims should not be in the military, shouldn't be in the country? When did America become so uneducated, or does the Internet just let them be seen and heard? It is okay to wear a cross, a head covering associated with religious beliefs under strict guidelines. Safety, uniformity, but as a pregnant woman wears a maternity uniform which accomadates her status, how does it harm us to accomadates another? I would worry about someone be to apparent to the anti-Muslim group, but it would be their choice with approval.

Col Rebecca Lorraine No matter how grand the strategy you should occasionally look at the results (Churchill). Winning wars is the purpose of the military. We haven't done a very good job of winning them since 1945. Wearing Hijabs (or other garb) is not going to help us win wars. The pushing of individualism over being a part of something larger (and more important) than self is the death of culture, military culture which should not be confused with the garden variety culture of the day to day world. This is only one example of the declining culture of the armed forces.
We continue to change the military without really understanding the impact to combat effectiveness and efficiency. That is the only measurement that really matters. Reflecting culture, diversity etc. are all nice to have but it is all fun and games until we are unable to run an armed force with a single focus and aligned on the mission not every distraction someone can throw in front of us.
The modern military is being turned into a federal jobs program more focused on making people happy and comfy and doling out benefits than preparing to win wars. That is, of course, a generalization. There are some units and areas that are fully prepared but they are becoming exceptional.

Cpl Jeff N. - It is adapting. As society must. Representing and respecting all Americans will win all wars.

SGT Efaw (Mick) G. - That was my point! Nothing is "set in stone". Those who fail to adapt, die. Life is really quite simple. The hijab is not an enemy, changing standards over 230 years is about survival. Dumb to really believe this is the issue.
