The government is not our parents. It is none of their business what someone chooses to do to their own body. And it is definitely not their job to teach anyone the word of God. The United States is not a theocracy and if it became one who knows what particular version it would pick as correct, you may find yourself on the wrong side of those in power.
Marijuana is no worse than alcohol. The 18th Amendment banned alcohol and see how well that turned out? A decade later the 21st Amendment was passed and it became legal again. The criminality surrounding the alcohol black market went away just as it will when marijuana is decriminalized. Look to Portugal to see how it has worked out for them. Use rates have dropped, infectious disease rates associated with certain drug uses have went down, and people are more open to seeking treatment when they do have a problem with abuse.
As far as taxing marijuana for it to be legal goes, the government has gone overboard in some areas. The tax rates are so high that the black market still exists since it is cheaper than buying through a legal store that pays in some cases 50% tax on the product. Taxes should never be a reason to make something legal or illegal. It should be because everyone has agency over their own body and no one else should be able to tell them what they can and cannot do to it. This doesn't mean it would be OK to come to work inebriated, just as you cannot do so now under the influence of alcohol, just that on your own time it should be your own business.
As far as the heroin and opioid crisis goes, states with legalized medical marijuana actually have lower rates of people ODing so maybe legalization is an answer.

It is less harmful than alcohol, cigarettes and chewing tobacco you may be ok with the government telling you which choices are OK to make and which aren't, but I'm not. You deciding its "evil" doesn't mean laws should mirror that OPINION.

When a government says yes to evil for tax revenue. MARIJUANA! Then they say no to teaching the word of God to make moral character and the human race better. Do you really think they care about anything but money? I do not trust any of them.
