President Nguyen Van Thieu retains control of the South Vietnamese National Assembly as candidates backing him sweep the opposition in the Mekong Delta, with a solid majority in the 159-member lower house. Thieu will be re-elected in October amid charges of corruption that resulted in the withdrawal of his two opponents, General Duong Van Minh and Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky. The election insured one man rule in Saigon and greatly damaged the government’s image and credibility with the South Vietnamese people.

Trumped up charges were nothing new to Vietnamese politics SP5 Mark Kuzinski. It was much too convenient for charges to be brought against General Duong Van Minh and Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky which forced them to drop out.
One man rule in South Vietnam helped to hasten its downfall as disgruntled voters stopped supporting the government in general.
In our own nation, Herman Cain was encouraged to drop out of the 2012 race after allegations of marital infidelity were leveled at him. The sad part is that impeached former President William Jefferson Clinton and most likely JFK where philanderers before and during their presidencies.
