I'm glad it wasn't very prevalent, but I knew several like him over the years. This was a failure of leadership. Blue sky and fair weather pilots...... Only when the weather was bad, or the mission was difficult would they relinquish and let the "riffraff" do those flights....
A generally reliable rule of thumb: If you really wanted to get the job done, give a tough mission to a CW2 (P) or CW3 (P). They had both time and experience, and they were "hungry". :-)

Weird part is he’s not alone. He just happened to have been caught that day. Imagine if a slew of them got caught at the same time regardless of branch....they’d have to promote NCOs to fill Junior Officer slots due to all the sudden officer positions that those former JOs vacated taking the senior ones.
