Thank you my friend TSgt Joe C. for sharing the music video of Pure Prairie League performing "Amie"
In 1975 the leadership at Fort Campbell decided to hold a concert with music to please everybody: On May 22, 1975 Pure Prairie League, Rufus with Chaka Kahn, Earl Scruggs Review, and then Jock Cocker performed. Rufus was up second and when they left the stage and Earl Scruggs got onto the stage, many of the black soldiers stormed out. It was outside on a warm May night and fights broke out.
Definitely not what the leadership had in mind.
In those days there were still a lot of draftees in the Army and tensions ran high.
"Pure Prairie League, Rufus, Earl Scruggs and Joe Cocker entertain 17,000 troops and their families at the army base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The concert, known as Music - You're My Mother, fails to break even at the box office, and base officials cancel another show planned for June 14th, the 200th anniversary of the army."
Amie
Lyrics
"I can see why you think you belong to me
I never tried to make you think, or let you see one thing for yourself
But now your off with someone else and I'm alone
You see I thought that I might keep you for my own
Amie what you want to do?
I think I could stay with you
For a while, maybe longer if I do
Don't you think the time is right for us to find
All the things we thought weren't proper could be right in time
And can you see
Which way we should turn together or alone
I can never see what's right or what is wrong
(will it take to long to see)
Amie what you want to do?
I think I could stay with you
For a while, maybe longer if I do
Well now
Amie what you want to do?
I think I could stay with you
For a while, maybe longer if I do
Now it's…"
