I wouldn't mind if our "first ladies " limited themselves even further than they do. People vote for the president, not for his wife. To hear some talk uou would think that "First Lady" is some actual government position.

CPT (Join to see) , excellent points. I DO agree that the spouses of our elected representatives hold no rank, power, or privilege, just as military spouses do not. My question, however, was more geared toward their ability to intelligently speak, understand, and convey upon prescient issues of the day, as Queen Rania is clearly able to do. Clearly as a "Queen Consort", she does possess the convenience of relative permanency, and thus has a modicum of sway as she has demonstrated with her movement of children's rights in Jordan. She has also demonstrated the limits to get influence while working toward equality for women in Jordan. Either way, it is refreshingly clear she is informed, and articulate on a range of Domestic, social, regional, and international issues, to the degree we do not see here in the US.
