Shot fired in the darkness in 1964 or even torpedoes could be observed but the ability to detect where and from who they were firing or launching did not exist in August 4, 1964.
In any event it was good that we were able to intercept the transmission decipher it in time to take action in the night at that that fateful series of events in the Gulf of Tonkin.
