If you want equal opportunity you must have equal responsibility.

Yes, they should register. If they want equality that's how it needs to be. If they want clearly established genders roles, then maybe they shouldn't have been screaming for equality in the first place. There are already rules in place to postpone or bypass selection, and I imagine pregnancy would be a disqualifier. Depending on if we require draftees to meet the military health and fitness standards, I imagine a lot of women would fail on that alone.

WOW! SGT Kristin Wiley, I'm glad to hear a female soldier weigh in on this discussion. With some of the scumbags having to register, if the registration continues, I would hope the draft is long gone, adios amigos, so nobody has to register. Thank you for your opinion.

SGT (Join to see) Personally, I think should get rid of the draft, and focus on recruiting and maintaining QUALITY soldiers. If we took care of the soldiers we had now, and provided incentives for high performers we would be able to keep the best and brightest in the service. If the negative stigma of the military and the VA disappeared; I imagine it would draw in higher quality recruits. When the last few 'wars' kicked off, instead of drafting new troops, we lowered standards. If we are unable to get volunteers during a time of war it is either because the people don't support the war, or the potential volunteers are cowards. If it's the first option, we should probably rethink going to war in the first place, if its the second, I wouldn't want to be forced to rely on cowards to guard my six. If we get stuck in a situation so dire, then we can look at reinstating a draft, but as of right now I don't think we need it.

LTC (Join to see) The problem is that civilians are all for women in the military having equality, because it doesn't affect them. Women in the military have little issue registering for the draft, we already joined, didn't we? So now we have civilians crying that they might get drafted because they supported equal opportunity for women, without having any first hand experience in the military. Yes, I think women should be allowed these opportunities, but I also think that the military needs to make that decision and not have it forced on them by politicians and the general public. Since leadership has decided we are opening the doors for women, then yes, that should include the draft. Now, I'm just waiting for us to view competency on capabilities, and not on stereotypes related to gender, appearance, or any of the other crap irrelevant to performing duties.

SGT Kristin Wiley - thanks. I guess my issue is that I am not aware of any civilian women who have come out complaining about the draft. So far, the only resistance to any of this that I've seen is coming from men. As to the military deciding who has the opportunity to serve, I disagree with that. If the military has gotten their way, they wouldn't have allowed blacks to serve in integrated units after WWII. The service chiefs historically are great proponents of maintaining the status quo. They unanimously opposed the formation of US SOCOM, insisting they could coordinate SOF on their own. Without congress overriding them, we would be today without the HQ perhaps most involved in fighting terrorists and would likely not have the capabilities we have today. Buying new things for special ops always took a back seat to funding the next tank or airplane or artillery piece. SOF R&D took bottom priority in the services budgets.

SGT, School me on why your don't want them to register. To me, it's slamming the door shut on reasons women cannot be seen as equals. Also registering for Selective Service is really pointless for anyone regardless of gender. There's not going to be a draft ever again (I hope) and we're an All Volunteer force. So to me, maybe the thing that needs to be done is do away with Selective Service altogether. If I'm wrong in anything I've said someone correct me. I've always thought signing up at 18 was just so if the draft was to come, they knew Mrs. Swan has an adult male of fighting age and here is his SSN so we could track him down.

This is the logic I hope most people start to use.

1) All things being equal, why not?

Followed immediately by:

2) Wait a second. We don't use it, why not get rid of it all together.

Most don't ever make that leap to #2 though.

SSG Warren Swan, This was my response to SFC Farrell.

SFC William Farrell, Y'all that don't see a problem with women registering and getting drafted, and serving as grunts in the Infantry, have me rethinking my original response. I guess some of my original thoughts were because of seeing the young women in PTSD counseling sessions because of repeated sexual assault while they were in Iraq, by some of their own NCO's. When I asked why didn't you report them. They all said the same thing, "report it to who".
