Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for starting a discussion about what transpired at A Shau 50 years ago as 20 US Special Forces and 375 South Vietnamese defended Tan outpost near A Shau against 2,000 NVA troops in a desperate fight.
One of the heroes that day was Maj. Bernard R Fisher who was an A-1E Skyraider pilot stationed at Pleiku. He was among the airmen who were diverted from other missions and ordered to make strafing runs along one wall of the fort in a final attempt to stop the NVN troops. For his bravery above and beyond the call of duty Major Fisher was the first Air Force officer during the Vietnam War to be awarded the first Medal of Honor. I am glad that he was alive when it was presented and he is still alive today.
